On Tuesday morning in Rochester, Minnesota, Senator Janet Nguyen had the distinct privilege of meeting with His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama for the second time this year. Among the many topics of discussion, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Senator Nguyen discussed her efforts to promote kindness in California and human rights in Vietnam. Joining Senator Nguyen for the 24-hour trip were Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and Westminster Mayor Tri Ta.
“As the inspiration for my Kindness Campaign, it was truly humbling to witness, first-hand, His Holiness’ commitment to the international proliferation of democracy and human kindness.” said Senator Janet Nguyen. “#KindCalifornia and the spread of the Kindness movement across Southern California is a testament to His Holiness’ ability to appeal to the hearts of millions.”
During the private meeting, Mayor Tait, Senator Nguyen and Mayor Ta, chronicled the history of their Kindness Campaign movements in California and their respective cities. For her part, Senator Nguyen’s campaign, #KindCalifornia kicked off on August 2nd at the OC Food Bank where more than one-hundred and fifty volunteers gathered to pack over 40,000 pounds of food. The mission of #KindCalifornia, an ongoing initiative, is to promote selflessness and encourage compassion among all Californians.
“It was a great honor to have been in the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and to express my gratitude for his exemplary life of compassion,” said Westminster Mayor Tri Ta.
In addition to discussing #KindCalifornia, Senator Nguyen also spoke of human rights in Vietnam, specifically the recent releases of Vietnamese human rights prisoners of conscience Dieu Cay and Ta Phong Tan. They also discussed China’s involvement in the South Asia Sea, including China’s efforts to control the Paracel Islands.
“I am deeply privileged to have had the opportunity to sit down with His Holiness to discuss the work that has been done to highlight the human rights abuses and the incarceration of prisoners of conscience across the world,” said Senator Janet Nguyen.
Senator Nguyen previously met His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama during his 80th Birthday Celebration in July. At that time, Senator Nguyen presented His Holiness with a resolution in honor of designating the month of July 2015 as “Kindness Month.”
