On this special Thanksgiving holiday, families throughout the state will unite in gratitude for the many blessings in their lives. Personally, I will be thankful for my parents who taught me to pursue my dreams, my husband and children who are the foundation of my life and my constituents, whose support has allowed me to give back to the country that gave me freedom and opportunities that were nonexistent in my country of origin.
As a public servant, I have been working very closely with members of the community and I am especially thankful for the legislative victories we achieved together. I am particularly proud to have authored a law that requires that United States or California flags purchased by the State, County or a municipality be made in America. Beyond promoting American businesses, this law ensures that an emblem of national pride that has inspired countless Veterans throughout history is made here at home. As a member of a military family, as well as the Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee and the Governor’s Military Council, this law carried with it special significance.
I am also proud to have authored other bills that were signed into law during the most recent legislative session. To support the local economy, I authored a law that allows nail salon technicians and nail salon business owners to pay fines over $500 using a payment plan and which also provides discretion to avoid imposing double fines for the same violation. This two-pronged approach helps an important sector of our local economy by minimizing the impact of disproportionately large or duplicate fines. On behalf of the many families impacted by the closure of Corinthian Colleges and ITT Technical Institute, I also authored a bill that eliminated tax liability on forgiven student loan debt for former students. Today, this law has put money back in the pockets of thousands families who would have otherwise been penalized through no fault of their own.
On the community service front, I am also proud to share that this Thanksgiving, we partnered with the Golden State Water Company and Lestonnac Free Clinic to expand upon our efforts to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to low income families. Thanks to their support, hundreds of families in the 34th Senate District will enjoy a warm meal this Thanksgiving.
As Californians we are truly fortunate to live in a vibrant community, one filled with generous and caring individuals. As you sit around the dinner table this Thanksgiving, let us give thanks for all that we have and also express our gratitude to those who make our community better, especially our Servicemembers and Veterans who fight so that we can enjoy immeasurable freedoms.
For your confidence in me, I thank you and reaffirm my commitment to continuing to work hard to ensure that you, the residents of the Thirty-Fourth District, prosper.
From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
With much gratitude,
