In her ongoing effort to bring funding for schools in the 34th Senate District, Senator Janet Nguyen is pleased to announce that she and her colleagues on the State Allocation Board (SAB) have unanimously approved the release of $10.6 million in seismic mitigation grants for two local schools to replace their gymnasiums. The two schools receiving funding are Pacifica High School and La Quinta High School, both in the Garden Grove Unified School District.
Funding for these improvements was made possible through Proposition 51, a school bond approved by voters in the November 2016 election. Prop 51 dollars are authorized for distribution by a 10 member committee comprised of: the Director of Finance, the Director of the Department of General Services, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, one appointee by the Governor and six members of State Legislature, among them three members of the Senate and three members of the Assembly. Senator Nguyen has been a member of the SAB since February 2017.
“Southern California is prone to earthquakes so it is critical that we have structures that can resist earthquake damage, especially if those structures are used by students,” said Senator Janet Nguyen. “Thanks to these seismic mitigation grants, Pacifica and La Quinta High Schools will have the opportunity to better prepare for a natural disaster.”
The Pacifica High School seismic mitigation grant is for $5.25 million. Meanwhile, the La Quinta High School grant is for $5.4 million. The funding will be utilized to replace two gymnasiums which were constructed in the early 1960s. The Garden Grove Unified School District, which is overseeing the construction, is planning to complete the projects by 2021.
Since her appointment to the SAB, Senator Nguyen has helped draw more than $26 million to schools including:
- $5.5 million in modernization grants for the Los Alamitos Unified School District and the Westminster Elementary School District
- $3.2 million in modernization grants for the Santa Ana Unified School District
- $7.3 million in modernization grants for the Long Beach Unified School District
- $10.6 million in seismic mitigation grants for the Garden Grove Unified School District
