California State Senator Janet Nguyen was appointed this week to serve as Vice Chair of the Senate’s Health Committee, Vice Chair of the Governance and Finance Committee, and as a member of the Budget, Human Services, and Veterans Committees. Senator Nguyen will assume her duties effective immediately.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to participate on committees that have a far reaching impact on the daily lives of all Californians,” said Senator Janet Nguyen. “We have important work to do in the State Legislature to ensure that our State operates in a more efficient manner while delivering quality services.”
As Vice Chair of the Governance and Finance Committee, Senator Nguyen will oversee issues relating to local government procedures, government reorganization, and budget reforms, including bills on local revenue and taxation. Senator Nguyen is committed to ensuring that her service on this committee protects Prop 13 and reduces the tax burden on residents. To complement these efforts, Senator Nguyen will also serve on the Budget and Fiscal Review Committee, which reviews the State budget.
“As a steward of public dollars, committed to transparency and accountability, I look forward to the opportunity to defend Prop 13 and cut wasteful spending while enhancing efficiency, quality services and ensuring that performance measures are met in government. To achieve this, I am eager to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to enhance fiscal responsibility in Sacramento,” said Senator Nguyen.
As a member of a military family, Senator Nguyen is also honored to serve on the Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee, which focuses on veterans, military affairs and armories. This appointment aligns with Senator Nguyen’s continuous efforts to recognize local veterans. During her tenure at the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Senator Nguyen authored the resolution that designated the County of Orange as a “Purple Heart County”, this effort successfully resulted in all 34 cities in Orange County adopting this resolution. She also spearheaded the naming of a lake at Mile Square Park as “Freedom Lake” and encouraged County agencies to provide priority services to Veterans.
Senator Nguyen’s appointments also include Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Health and member of the Senate Committee on Human Services. The Committee on Health has jurisdiction relating to public health, alcohol and drug abuse, mental health, health insurance and managed care and related institutions. The Committee on Human Services oversees bills that impact CalWORKS, welfare programs, food stamps, child welfare and foster care. The Committee also oversees services to persons with disabilities, including services provided by regional centers and state’s developmental centers, in-home supportive services, community care licensing, social services and rehabilitative services.
Senator Nguyen was confirmed as a member of these Senate standing committees on January 7th. These appointments are for the 2015-2016 Regular Session.

Senator Janet Nguyen was overwhelmingly elected to represent the residents of California’s 34th State Senate District in 2014. With this victory, Senator Nguyen became the first woman elected to represent the 34th Senate District and the first Vietnamese-American in the country to be elected to the State Senate. The 34th State Senate District includes the Cities of Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Los Alamitos, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Westminster, the unincorporated communities of Midway City and Rossmoor, as well as portions of Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, and Orange.
