Senator Janet Nguyen is proud to announce that the California State Legislature has approved Senate Concurrent Resolution 116 (SCR 116) which declares April 2018 as the Month of the Military Child. SCR 116 specifically honors the more than 158,000 military children living in California whose parents serve in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves. Underscoring the importance of this recognition, SCR 116 was unanimously approved by both chambers of the Legislature.
“Military children have to adapt their lives to meet the requirements of their parent’s military obligations. Changing schools and coping with long-term family separations are just some of the major sacrifices that these young children make while their parents serve our country,” said Senator Janet Nguyen. “SCR 116 sheds light on the impact of military service on children and encourages all Californians to show their appreciation for these brave children.”
In addition to authoring SCR 116, Senator Nguyen has dedicated great efforts to meet the needs of California’s military children. In 2016, Senator Nguyen recognized the lack of a reliable data system to track the progress and status of off-base military children and partnered with the Military Children’s Collaborative to author a joint letter that called on every school district in Orange County to add an identifier on every student’s enrollment form for military-connected children. Since 2015, Senator Nguyen has also supported military families during the holidays by hosting a Christmas Toy Drive to promote gift donations for the children of California’s Veterans and Servicemembers. Senator Nguyen also partners with various Veterans organizations dedicated to children including but not limited to the Military Children’s Collaborative Group.
A proud member of a military family, Senator Nguyen serves on the Governor's Military Council, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee and represents the Long Beach Veterans Hospital, the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, and the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base.
In 2017, Senator Nguyen previously authored SCR 4, which also recognized April 2017 as the Month of the Military Child.
