Senator Janet Nguyen Appointed to Governor's Military Council

Thursday, February 4, 2016

As an advocate for Veterans and Military Families, Senator Janet Nguyen is proud to announce that she has been appointed to the Governor’s Military Council. The Governor's Military Council works to protect and expand the military’s role in national security and California’s economy.

“Coming from a military family, I am honored to be given the opportunity to advise Governor Brown on strategies to strengthen and highlight the importance of California’s military installations and personnel,” said Senator Janet Nguyen.

The Governor’s Military Council was created through an Executive Order by Governor Jerry Brown in 2013 with the mission of protecting California’s 29 federal military installations and operations from potential Department of Defense (DoD) budget cuts and to leverage changes that will position the state to continue innovation and leadership in military affairs. This is especially important because over 360,000 men and women are employed by the DoD in California, including 168,000 active duty Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and Sailors.

“As representative of the Thirty-Fourth Senate District, home to two military installations, the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station and the Los Alamitos Joint Training Base, I am personally familiar with both the challenges that face our military bases, and the benefits they generate. Our bases are critical to the overall security and economic well-being of the State of California and I look forward to providing input to ensure they are protected,” said Senator Nguyen.

In addition to the members of the State Legislature, the Governor’s Military Council includes retired admirals and generals from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as the Adjutant General of the California National Guard and business leaders.

Senator Nguyen was nominated for this appointment by the Senate Committee on Rules and also serves as member of the Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee.
